I began my professional career as a teacher in Cypress-Fairbanks ISD. While teaching, I went on to receive a Master’s degree in Counseling Psychology from Our Lady of the Lake University. Since acquiring this degree in 2005, I have been working with individuals, families, couples and groups in a non-profit agency and in private practice. In addition to counseling and teaching, I have been supervising, training and mentoring therapists as they are beginning their new career.
Through the experience of being a teacher, counselor and trainer, I have welcomed the opportunity to engage people going through a variety of changes. Colleagues and clients know me to be inquisitive, understanding and not one to shy away from challenging situations. Using my curious nature and intentional listening style, I draw out and help people clarify their values and priorities, while highlighting their strengths. Through this conversation, valuable information arises to set goals and map out a path for achieving them. Understanding that each person has a different way of learning and growing, I work to adapt to the needs of each person's style for learning and growing.
Believing in the power of education and training, I continuously study, consult with other professionals and attend on average over 50 hours of professional training each year. In addition to foundational counseling principles and theories, I have advanced training and experience in 3 evidenced based practices: Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), Gottman Couples Therapy and Eye Movement Desensitizing and Reprocessing (EMDR). Other models such as, Solution Focused Therapy, Collaborative Language Systems, Motivational Interviewing, and Imago Therapy are woven into the process.
In addition to counseling, I also enjoy supervising post graduate licensed professional counselor associates and licensed marriage and family therapist associates completing their 3000 hour internship for the last step of meeting the state licensing requirements.
Outside the office, I enjoy tapping into my adventurous spirit by doing things like traveling, and being outdoors in nature. As a lover of people and animals, I enjoy having my furry co-therapist in session at the request of the client.
