Teen and young adults

The Woodlands Center for Families recognizes the strength and benefits of therapy for young developing minds. In a world of confusion that can be tough to navigate, teens and young adults often experience pain, struggle with establishing who they are and keeping up with challenging expectations. Our team offers individual, group and family therapy to help our clients discover who they are, clarify their values, develop healthy ways of coping with these difficult situations and work through strained relationships. We aim to understand the uniqueness of each client's experience of these developmental stages with hopes of providing a healthy foundation for years to come.

Teen & Young Adult DBT Skills Classes

Considering maturity is not based solely on age, we have created multiple classes. Before starting we require and initial evaluation with both the teenager and parent.

If your teen is experiencing more severe problems or emotions such as suicidal or self-harming thoughts, it is recommended to have individual therapy in addition to the weekly class session. Having one on one therapy allows them to have the time and attention to work on his or her  particular issues in private.

Class meets once a week for 90 minutes. It has a class like environment for the purpose of learning and practicing skills without getting deeply into participants' personal problems.

Members will be taught the  following 4 skills modules :

  1. Emotional Regulation
  2. Distress Tolerance
  3. Interpersonal Skills
  4. Mindful

An initial commitment of 4 weeks is required to determine if the group will be of benefit to your teen. The curriculum can take up to 6 months to cover once. Experience has shown repeating the curriculum several times builds stronger retention of skills. Many choose to continue on longer to create longer lasting change.
